Seattle, WA — July 3, 2024 — Chin Music Press is thrilled to announce the release of Seattle Samurai: A Cartoonist's Perspective of the Japanese American Experience, the latest work by renowned author Kelly Goto. The book is scheduled for an official release on October 22, 2024, with a special community launch event on November 2, 2024.
Seattle Samurai offers a unique and engaging exploration of the Japanese American experience, blending Kelly Goto’s insightful narrative with Bushido-inspired cartoons drawn by her father, Sam Goto. This semi-biographical work weaves together cultural history and personal narratives to depict the rich heritage of Japanese Americans in Seattle and the broader Pacific Northwest.
Kelly Goto, a fourth-generation Japanese American, combines historical insights with her father’s illustrated stories, weaving a cultural tapestry that spans generations. Her work delves into themes of identity, resilience, and community, providing readers with an immersive experience that is both relatable and deeply moving. Sam Goto’s cartoons provide the foundation for the narrative, offering a visual journey through the principles of Bushido and their relevance to the Japanese American experience.
"We are incredibly excited to publish Seattle Samurai," said Bruce Rutledge, co-founder of Chin Music Press. "Kelly Goto's ability to intertwine local history with her father's art provides a fresh perspective on the Japanese American experience. This book is not only a visual delight but also a profound narrative that will resonate with readers of all backgrounds."
The launch event on November 2, 2024 will take place at the Wing Luke Museum in Seattle, featuring a reading and book signing by Kelly Goto. This exclusive event will offer readers an in-person opportunity to engage with the author and gain insights into the creation of Seattle Samurai.
